Beware the Left’s Dangerous New Anti-Trump Strategy

Opinion -- As President Trump continues to achieve victory after victory, all to the dismay of the left, the left seems to have stumbled upon a new tactic for delegitimizing the President. It is, admittedly, a clever - and sinister - strategy, as it acknowledges that the best way to defeat Trump is to pull his base out from under him. The Democratic base is shrinking as the party continues to fracture, while President Trump retains his base as it continues to grow in size and influence.
As such, the left has now resorted to a tactic that seeks to undercut the President’s base through outright lies and manipulation: Make public statements declaring that the President has flip-flopped on a major issue, when he actually has done no such thing.
Look no further than the two most recent examples, both of which made headlines across the country due to the firestorm they caused among Trump’s base.
First, it was the statement by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, as they declared that the President had reached an agreement on passing DACA legislation without including funding for his border wall. As this appeared to reflect a softening of Trump’s tone on immigration - arguably his signature issue - many in his base and among the Republican Party were outraged at the declaration. However, both Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and President Trump himself quickly responded to clarify that the wall had not been excluded - the latter even went so far as to declare that the wall is essentially non-negotiable, saying “if we don’t have the wall, we’re doing nothing.”
Then, a few days later, another false attack came out from the left; this time, it was from a European Union official, on the subject of the Paris Climate Agreement. First reported by the usually-reliable Wall Street Journal, EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete declared that, after a meeting of 30 ministers from around the world - at which the US was conspicuously absent - the U.S. had decided to not withdraw from the Agreement after all. This too was quickly debunked by Sanders and other White House officials, who echoed the very same statements that President Trump made in his original announcement of the withdrawal: that the U.S. will withdraw from the agreement unless it is renegotiated to terms that are more beneficial for the U.S.
At the core of all this, the left and the media (but I repeat myself) are trying to take the President’s most far-right stances on anything - from immigration to international agreements - and present anything closer to the center as a “betrayal” of his base, while also perpetuating sheer lies about the exact amount of moderation the President has displayed. On the DACA ordeal, they took President Trump’s “original” stance to be 100% deportation for all illegals, and made it appear that even a slight moderation on that was some sort of reversal; on the Paris Agreement, they made anything less radical than complete withdrawal seem like a flip-flop.
In both cases, perhaps the worst tragedy - even beyond the blatant lying - is the fact that these politically-motivated lies cover up the great achievements made by the President in both cases. What seems to have truly happened, on both DACA and the Paris Agreement, is that the President actually negotiated successful bipartisan deals from across the aisle. In the former case, he actually reached some sort of agreement - or perhaps reached the first step of such an agreement - with bitter political enemies such as Schumer and Pelosi. As pointed out by Scott Adams, this marks a significant milestone in his presidency just several months after these same figures were basically equating him to Hitler, and bipartisanship was thought impossible. The same goes for the EU and other international officials, whom Trump took direct aim at during his historic speech before the United Nations.
As the President reaches yet another turning point in his presidency - with his approval ratings rising in the aftermath of his hurricane responses, major policy successes, and bipartisan accomplishments - the left is now resorting to open lies and literal fake news to attempt to discredit him with his base one last time. But the sooner we recognize this tactic and combat it - namely, by ignoring it and focusing on the truth - the faster the left will collapse as the President continues to win, both for himself and for America.
