BREAKING NEWS: Senator Jeff Flake to Retire in 2018
In a shocking announcement, Arizona Senator Jeff Flake (R) has announced that he will not be seeking reelection after all in 2018.
This decision comes as Flake is widely seen as the single most vulnerable GOP Senator up for reelection next year. Recently, he has been facing an increasingly likely possibility of being defeated in the primaries by challenger Kelli Ward, who is supported by former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon. Recent polling has shown Ward leading Flake by double-digit margins.
Recently, Flake had faced criticism for his vocal opposition to President Trump despite mostly voting for the President’s policies in the Senate. Along with Dean Heller in Nevada, Flake was considered one of the few rare Republican incumbents who might not win reelection next year, despite the electoral map overwhelmingly favoring Republicans. This is possibly due to his conflict with the President, which inspired Bannon to publicly support challengers to Flake and other Republicans in Congress who Bannon says are obstructing the President’s agenda.
