12 Revelations from the Podesta Emails

12 Revelations from the Podesta Emails

Shanna Nelson, Business Policy Contributor

On October 10th, WikiLeaks leaked part 2 of the emails collected from John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chair. This list and info released is lengthy, but here is our take on the twelve most important and telling  pieces of information released in the emails.

1. Hillary admits to being out of touch with the middle class.
In the emails, Hillary admits that “I'm Kind Of Far Removed” from the middle class and the American people. She explained that the life she grew up with and the life she and Bill now have not given her as much of an understanding of middle class struggles as people think. She says, “I'm kind of far removed because the life I've lived and the economic, you know, fortunes that my husband and I now enjoy”.

2. Their Anti-Catholic Remarks
One chain of emails released contained emails between Podesta and John Halpin on March 31st, 2016 from the Center for American Progress in which they mocked Rupert Murdoch for raising his children catholic. The Hill reports Halpin writing:

Friggin’ Murdoch baptized his kids in Jordan where John the Baptist baptized Jesus... Many of the most powerful elements of the conservative movement are all Catholic (many converts) from the SC and think tanks to the media and social groups. It’s an amazing bastardization of the faith. They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations and must be totally unaware of Christian democracy.

illary’s Communications Director, Jennifer Palmieri, weighed in, I imagine they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion... Their rich friends wouldn't understand if they became evangelicals.

3. Brent Budowski says Hillary lies “candidly”
Brent Budowski, a far left opinion editor, wrote Podesta discussing the beginnings of a PAC involving Bill De Blasio, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders to raise money for democratic candidates, including Clinton, assuming she’s the nominee. He also said,

Beyond this Hillary should stop attacking Bernie, especially when she says things that are untrue, which candidly she often does. I am one of the people with credibility to suggest Bernie people support her in November, and she and Benenson and others have no idea of the damage she does to herself with these attacks, which she does not gain by making.

4. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are Funding ISIS
In an email Clinton sent to Podesta on August 17th, 2014, she said,

While this military/para-military operation is moving forward, we need to use our diplomatic and more traditional intelligence assets to bring pressure on the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL and other radical Sunni groups in the region... This effort will be enhanced by the stepped up commitment in the [Kurdish Regional Government]. The Qataris and Saudis will be put in a position of balancing policy between their ongoing competition to dominate the Sunni world and the consequences of serious U.S. pressure.

5. Podesta thinks Cecil the Lion’s Killer Should be Extradited to Zimbabwe and Jailed
Podesta said in an email to former New York Times Berry Bearak on August 1, 2015 that he should write a column advocating for Cecil the Lion’s killer to be sent back to Zimbabwe and turned over to their authorities. Bearak has spent time in brutal Zimbabwean prisons due to backlash from authoritarian Robert Mugabe. “As the only person anyone knows who has spent time in a Zimbabwe jail, you should pen an op-ed calling for his killer’s extradition,” he said, “What an as*h*le.”

6. Clinton Campaign Demands “Compliant Citizenry”
These emails were between Podesta and Bill Ivey, who Bill Clinton appointed as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. In the emails, he discussed their plans regarding Trump and Ivey said,

And as I’ve mentioned, we’ve all been quite content to demean government, drop civics and in general conspire to produce an unaware and compliant citizenry.

7.  1996 Defense of Marriage Act
An email among Clinton staffers was sent during October of 2015 doing damage control regarding DOMA, which defined marriage between a man and a woman. The email said,

I’m not saying double down or ever say it again. I’m just saying that she’s not going to want to say she was wrong about that, given she and her husband believe it and have repeated it many times. Better to reiterate evolution, opposition to DOMA when court considered it, and forward looking stance.

8. DNC Leaks Info from Sanders Campaign
In an email chain from January of 2016, DNC chair Donna Brazile leaked info about a planned “twitter storm” from the African-American outreach team from the Bernie Sanders campaign. She forwarded the emails to them with the subject “FYI”, with a Clinton Spokesman responding, “Thank you for the heads up on this Donna”. There are also many emails with John Harwood, a New York Times writer and CNBC correspondent with Podesta, “communicating more as a Clinton surrogate than a journalist.”

9. Hillary’s Private and Public Stances
Hillary Clinton stated in emails that she has a private and public stance on issues:

But If Everybody’s Watching, You Know, All Of The Back Room Discussions And The Deals, You Know, Then People Get A Little Nervous, To Say The Least. So, You Need Both A Public And A Private Position.

With the amount of flip-flopping on issues that she has done, for example, her position on gay marriage changing in 2013, this should be concerning to her supporters. If your candidate is outright saying that she has a private and public stance on various issues, how do you know what you’re actually voting for?

10. Clinton and her Wall Street Speeches
Talking about holding Wall Street accountable for only political reasons: “And I think that there's a lot that could have been avoided in terms of both misunderstanding and really politicizing what happened”.
Talking about needing Wall Street funding to win (at a Goldman Sachs event):

Secondly, running for office in our country takes a lot of money, and candidates have to go out and raise it. New York is probably the leading site for contributions for fundraising for candidates on both sides of the aisle, and it’s also our economic center. And there are a lot of people here who should ask some tough questions before handing over campaign contributions to people who were really playing chicken with our whole economy.

Bragging about her relationship with Wall Street:

When I was a Senator from New York, I represented and worked with so many talented principled people who made their living in finance. But even though I represented them and did all I could to make sure they continued to prosper, I called for closing the carried interest loophole and addressing skyrocketing CEO pay.

11. Hillary Clinton knew of the security concerns with the State Department, but had a private email server anyway

At The State Department We Were Attacked Every Hour, More Than Once An Hour By Incoming Efforts To Penetrate Everything We Had. And That Was True Across The U.S. Government.

12. Hillary calls for “fairness” and “equality” for all, but she’s a cheater
Yet another released email. This one indicating that DNC Chair, Donna Brazile, may have obtained one of the questions to be asked during a Clinton and Sanders town hall, prior to the event. The question was on the death penalty, according to the email, a question that Brazile was worried about Clinton’s answer to. What better to handle this than to make sure that the question is asked just the right way? And that’s exactly what happened.
